heads up: older versions of java trigger error messages, users MUST update

Just got a message from TBird 11.0 running on Win7 SP1 7
“Thunderbird has determined that the following add-ons are known to cause stability or security problems:
Java Platform SE 6 U23 6.0.230.5 … Blocked”
So there’s an equivalent issue in TBird.

Security colleagues,
Threatpost reports that Firefox for Windows is blocking execution of older Java versions. This may affect users of Java-based applications if they haven’t updated Java.A similar block for MacOS Firefox may be coming, but until a day or two ago there was no patch for the MacOS Java corresponding to the Windows patch Oracle issued in February. That shortcoming is being exploited. My home and work MacBooks have updated to Java 1.6.0_31, which patches vulnerabilities described in this article:So at this point I think Macintosh users have two choices: apply the Java 1.6.0_31 update, or disable Java (as described in the f-secure article linked above). Keeping Java disabled in browsers, unless running an application that requires it, is probably a good practice at all times.-Dean W.———————————–Dean WilliamsInformation Security OfficerEnterprise Technology Services
